Dr. Villanueva is a co-founder of Innovative Pain and Spine Physicians, which focuses on the multi-disciplinary approach of treating pain from a variety of disease processes including neck and back spinal conditions, complex regional pain syndrome, joint disease, and chronic pain from spinal cord injuries, neurological disorders, cancer, and other medical conditions. His comprehensive treatment of pain includes an in-depth investigation of the root causes that could be contributing to their pain and associated symptoms and neurodeficits.

Dr. Villanueva achieves excellent outcomes through effective communication, a methodical medical history and pertinent physical exam, and ensuring that the patient understands their condition and treatment options. Treatments are tailored to each patient and may include a focused physical therapy program and/or bracing, behavioral management (pain and stress coping skills), and medications prescribed in a safe manner. As a skilled Pain Management Interventionalist, Dr. Villanueva is proficient in performing soft tissue and joint injections (under ultrasound guidance if necessary), fluoroscopic guided neck and back injections, and minimally invasive interventions (spinal cord and/or nerve neuromodulation) if indicated. He has also has extensive training in electrodiagnostic nerve conduction and Electromyography (EMG) studies for evaluating injuries of the peripheral and central nervous system.

From the time he was a First Honors and Cum Laude Society graduate of the prestigious Loyola High School of Los Angeles, Dr. Villanueva has set the bar high in his academics, knowing that his future patients would only expect excellence from him as their physician. He left Southern California for 13 years of undergraduate university, medical school, and post-doctoral training. Dr. Villanueva received his Ivy League B.A. degree with honors from Cornell University in New York, then received his Medical Doctorate from the US News & World Top 10 ranked University of Minnesota Medical School, where he received the William Knobloch Merit Scholarship and the David E. Rogers Research Fellowship from the renowned New York Academy of Medicine. He completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency training at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, one of the top-ranking pain & rehabilitation hospital systems in the nation. He then completed his Pain Management Fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. During his post-graduate training, Dr. Villanueva was recognized with numerous awards for excellence in teaching and scholarly work. He has published scientific papers in high impact journals, such as Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface. Dr. Villanueva presented nationally on a variety of topics involving both rehabilitation medicine and pain medicine.

 As a member of several professional societies including: the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, American Society of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Dr. Villanueva remains current on new technologies and pharmaceuticals in his specialty field, applying these medical advances to his practice.

Outside of work, he is a highly accomplished musician (pianist and vocalist since age 4), volunteers in social justice advocacy groups, participates in free clinics and medical missions, and keeps a healthy lifestyle of exercising and all the outdoor activities sunny Southern California has to offer. He also volunteers with the Cornell Alumni Club of Los Angeles encouraging local underprivileged youth to pursue higher education and professional careers.

Coupled with his excellent diagnostic and interventional skills, Dr. Villanueva is best known by his patients and staff for his disarming demeanor and friendly smile. He treats every patient with respect regardless of their socio-economic background by listening empathetically, and treating them as a whole person with the goal of returning them to optimal function.

Dr. Root is a Co-Founder of Innovative Pain and Spine Physicians, whose mission is finding the root cause of your pain and treating it appropriately with compassion in order to reduce your pain and maximize your functional capacity. The best of both worlds, Dr. Root is both a physician and a physical therapist. As a result, he is able to integrate his comprehensive knowledge of the kinesiology, anatomy, and musculoskeletal medicine to help reduce your pain and restore your function. Dr. Root is a fellow of the American Academy of PM&R, and specializes in performing Electrodiagnostic (EMG/NCS) studies, which is a diagnostic tool for the following conditions: radiculopathies (pinched nerves in the back & neck), compression neuropathies, and peripheral neuropathies. In addition, Dr. Root is skilled in joint injection therapies, and fluoroscopic spine injection therapies including epidural, facet, and nerve blocks, as well as disrupting the nerve’s ability to send pain signals through a radiofrequency ablation or neuromodulation (spinal cord or peripheral nerve stimulation).

After graduating with honors with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, Dr. Root went on to obtain his medical degree at the Western University of the Health Sciences in Pomona, CA. Dr. Root completed his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency in Philadelphia, PA at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, a US News & World top ranked hospital in Rehabilitation Medicine and Model Systems Spinal Cord Injury Center.

Dr. Root then completed his fellowship training in Santa Barbara, specializing in Interventional Pain and Spine procedures. Following fellowship, he stayed on as faculty and Assistant Director of their fellowship program, where he is respected as a sound clinician and teacher of musculoskeletal medicine, ultrasound-guided peripheral injections, and fluoroscopic-guided spine procedures. He also has been recognized by the Thomas Jefferson University faculty during residency with numerous awards in scholarly work and teaching medical students. He has published in nationally recognized medical journals in the field of PM&R and has presented his research at national meetings, including the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

Dr. Root’s work in pain management and injection therapy helps provide relief to those suffering from complicated and debilitating conditions without invasive back or neck surgery. He utilizes treatments that are easy for his patients to manage and fit into their lifestyle and daily activities. Dr. Root is well known for his caring, helpful bedside manner and willingness to help his patients feel relief from painful and sometimes debilitating conditions.
